The Old Drogheda Society will host a lecture on Wednesday November 13th, in the Governor's House Millmount, at 8pm.
Community historian, Brendan Matthews will talk on the life and times of the Forgotten street characters of Drogheda, including 'Kate the Navvy': a well-known street character of the Boyneside during the later 19th century who was' immortalised' in John Cassidy's painting depicting a street scene of West Street, in the 1880's. The painting now hangs in the Highlanes in Drogheda.
The street characters, many of them lovable rogues, had a hard, but often colourful life and are so worthy of being remembered as part of the social history of Drogheda. All are welcome to the lecture and there will be a bookstall on the night.
