Book Launch: Reflections on The 1916 Rising

On Saturday morning next, April 30th, the Old Drogheda Society will officially launch their latest publication 'Reflections on the 1916 Rising' in Drogheda Tourist Office in the Tholsel, West Street between 12noon and 1.30pm. 

A number of locals artists, musicians and poets will perform at the book launch, which will begin with a young student from Scoil Aonghusa reading out the 'Children's Proclamation' in Irish from the steps of the Tholsel.

Uileann piper, Darragh O'Heiligh will play the Seamus Ennis composition 'Easter Snow' and there will be a number of other musical performances and poetical renditions. 

All members of the Old Drogheda Society are invited to attend and bring friends or family.

Copies of the new 206 page publication will be on sale from after the launch until 5pm.

In tandem to the book launch, the Drogheda Arts Festival will hold a family event on St Peter's Plazza in West Street which will provide an afternoon of crazy fun, daredevil aerial, sword swallowing, magic, circus and Afro-Caribbean beats and circus performances

A mystical journey into the world of circus, books, inventions and mayhem. Enter the private library of the distinguished inventor Tarquin Potts where he whips up a chaotic storm on his quest to outwit every circus artist’s worse enemy - gravity.

Book Launch: Louth Folk Tales

A fascinating new book Louth Folk Tales by professional storyteller Doreen McBride, will be launched in the Governor's House Millmount on Wednesday June 10th at 8pm.

The book recounts the local tales, ancient and modern, of County Louth, including the doomed love of Lassara and her harpist who haunted the waters of Carlingford Lough, of the origin of the River Boyne, of Drogheda's haunted house and of the jumping church at Kildemock.

The book looks at St Brigid's association with Faughart, the Maiden Tower in Mornington and how Drogheda's Mayoralty House had its roof partially destroyed by the “Big Wind". It also deals with how the Hound of Ulster recovered from war wounds on the Death Mound of Du Largy, the Long Woman's Grave, the Death of Conla at Rosnaree with 30 stories included in the book.

Doreen has stortytelling in her blood. She was born in Belfast, listened to stories at her grandmother's knee and inherited a family tradition of storytelling. She is a well known broadcaster, teacher and author as well as being an imaginative storyteller, sharing her tales throughout Ireland, America, Canada and New Zealand.

Refreshments and entertainment will be provided on what should be a very enjoyable night. Copies of the book will be available to purchase on the night

Drogheda in 1847: Brendan Matthews Book Launch Tonight

The launch of the eagerly awaited book  Drogheda & The Ottoman Empire Ships of 1847 by Community Historian, Brendan Matthews will take place on Wednesday December 3rd at the Governors House Millmount at 8pm.

 

The work tackles unravelling the tale of the social conditions in Drogheda during the Great famine year of 1847 and the `supposed` food-aid delivered to the port of that town by the Ottoman Empire`.

Brendan has researched this subject for a number of years and his findings make very interesting reading.
