ODS President's Lunch 2016

The Annual Old Drogheda Society President's lunch takes place on Sunday next, December 4th in the Boyne Valley Hotel when the guest speaker will be legendary film composer, arranger and musician Fiachra Trench.

Fiachra spent his early life in in Church Lane Drogheda, before the family moved to live in Slane. His mother was the well known artist Bea Orpen, former president of the Irish Countrywomen's Association, and co- founder of the Drogheda Municipal Art Collection with her husband Terry Trench, who was a founder member and a former president of An Óige, the Irish Youth Hostels Association and author of books on Slane and Newgrange

From 1969 until 1991 Fiachra he worked in London as composer, arranger, musical director and record producer. He has worked with the best in the business, including Kate Bush, Van Morrison, Elvis Costello, Art Garfunkel, Phil Lynott, Sinead O'Connor, Paul Brady, Mary Black, The Chieftans, The Corrs, Bonnie Tyler and Paul McCartney.

His musical credits are impressive and his string arrangement appears on such hits as 'Fairytale of New York' by the Pogues, a song we will all hear a lot in the run up to Christmas; 'Love is all around' by Wet Wet Wet, which sold 1.88 millions copies and was number one in the UK charts for 15 weeks and 'I don't like Mondays' by the Boomtown Rats which spent four weeks at number one..

Since returning to Ireland he has worked principally on music for film and television. His scores include those for Dear Sarah, A Love Divided and the major BBC documentary series, People’s Century. He has also collaborated on many film scores including Twelfth Night, Die Hard and Pearl Harbour.

ODS President's Lunch 2015

The Annual Old Drogheda Society President's Lunch (President Frank Gallagher) will be held on Sunday December 6th in the Boyne Valley Hotel at 1.00 pm sharp.

Guest speaker this year is Paddy Donnelly, a Drogheda man who served for 26 years as Killkenny County Manager.

Having commenced his career in the public service in 1956, he was Assistant Private Secretary to Neil Blaney and Private Secretary to Kevin Boland before being appointed Meath County Secretary in 1973.

He held the position of Temporary Meath County Manager for two years until his appointment as Kilkenny County Manager in 1976 until his retirement in 2002.
 
In his time as County Manager, Kilkenny made great strides in establishing its reputation as a heritage and tourism destination.

Guest For Lunch - Col Colm Doyle

Our Guest at the Annual Old Drogheda Society's President's Lunch next Sun 14 Dec 2014 in the Boyne Valley Hotel at 1pm is Col Colm Doyle, who grew up in Drogheda and was Ireland's top man at the United Nations in charge of international peace keeping. He is probably most famous for his involvement in Bosnia and Sarajevo in the 1990s and for his high profile clash with "The Butcher of the Balkans", Radovan Karadzic in the International Criminal Court in the Hague in 2003.

Colm grew up in Drogheda where he lived on the Chord Rd and attended St. Joseph's CBS. With his twin brother Francis he was part of the famous Drogheda Leaving Cert class of 1964 which included such luminaries as Eamonn Campbell of the Dubliners; Gerry Cullen of the Voice Squad; Nicholas Carolan Director of the Irish Traditional Music Archive; Paddy Clarke, Manager of the Louth G.A.A. Team and Seán Corcoran, Chairperson of the Old Drogheda Society.

Colm played hurling with the Wolfe Tones Club, Drogheda and was a member of the Louth Minor Team.

ODS President's Christmas Lunch

The President's Christmas Lunch will this year be held on Sunday December 14th in the Boyne Valley Hotel at 1pm. Guest speaker will be Colonel Colm Doyle, who grew up in the Chord Road and who served in the Irish Army for 42 years .He has extensive experience of overseas service. These included tours of duty with the United Nations in Cyprus, Lebanon, The Middle East and New York.

He is a former head of the European Union Monitoring Mission for Bosnia in 1991 and returned there as Personal Representative of the Chairman of the International Peace Conference, Peter Carrington during the lead up to war in 1992. He was directly involved in negotiating cease-fires in the city of Sarajevo and, in particular, securing the hostage release of President Izetbegovic.

Colonel Doyle was selected by the United Nations to serve as Chief of Staff of the Military Division in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations, New York from 2004 to 2006. He was responsible for the day to day operations of 17 United Nations Missions across the world.


He has assisted the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia in The Hague since 1995, testifying as a prosecution witness at the trials of Slobodan Milosevic in 2003, General Pavle Strugar in 2004, Radovan Karadzic in 2010 and General Ratko Mladic in 2012.
