Society
The Old Drogheda Society’s series of Winter Lectures continue on Wednesday November 26th at 8pm, in the Governor’s House, Millmount, when James Kane will speak on The Confederate Wars of the 1640s - Sir Phelin & Owen Roe – Who Were They?
James O’Kane is a descendent of the famous O`Neill Dynasty of Ulster and is an established Historian on the O`Neill`s. He is also Vice-Chairperson of the O’Neill Country Historical Society. In this talk he tells the story of the Siege of Drogheda in 1641 by Irish forces under Sir Phelim O’Neill and the Battle of Julianstown.
He also deals with the return to Ireland in 1642 of Owen Roe O’Neill (Eoin Rua Ó Néill) who took command of the Irish forces in an attempt to overturn the Plantation of Ulster. The story ends with the arrival of Cromwell and the sack of Drogheda in 1649.
To coincide with this lecture, a new book, titled, The Battle of Julianstown and the Siege of Drogheda, by Community Historian Brendan Matthews, will be available for the first time on the evening and the Old Drogheda Society will have a book stall. All Welcome.
