Old Drogheda Society
Ghostwalk 2016
On Friday evening, 28th October, Drogheda Museum Millmount held its seventh Ghostwalk, its by now traditional Halloween time event and one of the highlights of its year.
Two sold out walking tours gathered in the Millmount courtyard to hear an introduction to the festival of Halloween and how it has evolved from the ancient Irish festival of Samhain.
The tours were led by ODS stalwarts Liam Reilly in the guise of a medieval lord and Margaret Clinton who was unrecognisable as the returning ghost of Alice Kyteler - the first person in Ireland to be executed as a witch.
The walking tours then meandered through the town, meeting characters in historical costumes – the ghosts of Drogheda’s past - who illustrated their life and times at intervals along the way. They were introduced by the tour leaders who supplied much background information about the particular characters as well as telling many stories about the history of the various locations at which the tour paused.
The whole range of Drogheda’s history through the centuries was covered and several new characters were introduced to the narrative this year.
Feedback from the participants was excellent and the event certainly matched the aim of the museum to educate through entertainment.
Eamon Thornton, speaking on behalf of the museum, said:
It was great fun for the volunteers who made it happen and for the audience. We can’t wait to do it again next year when it should be even bigger and better.
