Monastery to Mansion: Tudor Remodelling at Mellifont and Related Sites

Old Drogheda Society

Tonight Dr Geraldine Stout will lecture on Monastery to Mansion: Tudor Remodelling at Mellifont and Related Sites in the Governor's House Millmount, Drogheda, at 8pm. Hosted by the County Louth Archaeological & Historical Society.

The lecture focuses on the history of the Cistercian abbey post-Dissolution. In the period after the Acts of Dissolution 1540-41 a great number.of former monasteries were converted to domestic use by leading Crown favourites who took advantage of their position to transform them into residential mansions. Amongst these was the Moore family who became owners of Mellifont in 1563. The lecture presents a reconstruction of Mellifont House, 'the great stone house', based on the surviving evidence on the ground and a recently discovered plan of 1714. The other related sites are Bective Abbey, Co. Meath and Dunbrody Abbey, Co. Wexford.

Admission is free and all welcome.

Appreciation of Ian Kenneally

Old Drogheda Society

The ODS wishes to thank Ian Kenneally for the riveting lecture he delivered yesterday evening. His vivid delivery of a narrative on the Plains Wars that so concentrated the minds of US military strategist in the 180os and caused immeasurable pain in the name of progress, was a intellectual dish of the finest cuisine.

His detail concerning the participation, lives and deaths of Irish men in the ranks of the US military, proved a strong allure to a Droghedian audience with an appreciation of history.

The ODS expresses gratitude also to an attentive audience, a number of whom engaged with Ian Kenneally.

The ODS is committed to bringing more lectures of this quality to Drogheda.

Thank you Ian Kenneally.

Seachtain na Gaeilge’

Old Drogheda Society

Most of us are familiar with ‘Seachtain na Gaeilge’ which promotes the Irish language during the two week lead up to Saint Patrick's Day on March 17th. But did you know that the festival was established by Conradh na Gaeilge, (also known in English as the Gaelic League) far back as 1903?

The following article appeared in the Drogheda Independent on Saturday March 6th 1915 under the heading “A Word for a Small Nationality”. It details how March has traditionally been the month ... when a ‘special effort’ had been made to encourage people in supporting Irish-Ireland, from sermons in Catholic and Protestant Churches preached through Irish, to shopkeepers displaying Irish manufactured goods.

It mentions how this appeal is directed not just to Gaelic Leaguers but to “every Irish man and woman, no matter their class, creed, or condition” and includes the great quotation from Thomas Davis, best known for his work with the Young Ireland movement:

“Language is a Nation’s soul; a country without a language is only half a Nation”.
