Drogheda Engineering Industry Lecture

Old Drogheda Society

The fourth and final talk in the series hosted by The Mill Enterprise Centre and Drogheda Museum Millmount will take place tomorrow evening at 8pm.

It will focus on the engineering industry in Drogheda. Dan Mullan from the Museum, will be speaking on the history of engineering including Grendons Foundry and Drogheda Ironworks, and Stuart Carolan of Cisco Engineering Ltd will discuss how they built an engineering business in Drogheda.

The talk will look at the investment in Drogheda from German Engineering firm, Hauni during the 1960’s, and how its closure spawned a number of Entrepreneurs (including Cisco Engineering) in Drogheda when it closed in 1974.

Thomas Grendon & Company opened on the South Quay in Drogheda in 1835 and at its height in the mid nineteenth century, occupied a site from Old Graves Lane to Ship Street, employing over 600 people. Grendon’s built bridges, water tanks, drain covers, farming implements, lighthouse equipment, buoys, ships, steam boats, barges, train engines and some brass works.

They built Dominic's Bridge in Drogheda, the lattice railway bridge across the Royal Canal, the Obelisk Bridge across the Boyne at Oldbridge and many more bridges at home and abroad. In 1866 they constructed the Diving Bell used to create Dublin port and Alexandra Basin, which continued to be used until 1958.

They were the only commercial makers of broad-gauge steam locomotives in Ireland, and built around 50, supplying the Great Northern Railway, the Midland Great Western Railway, the Dublin to Kingstown Railway and most of the railways in Ireland between the years 1844 and 1885. One of their locomotives is in Brazil.

Their street drainage gratings can still be seen throughout Drogheda including Magdalene Street, Fair Street and Bolton Square.

Also on the night Stuart Carolan of Cisco Engineering will speak on the industry today. Cisco Engineering has been involved in many projects in the Louth area, including the Boyne Cable Bridge, Laurence Shopping Centre, and construction of the M1 Motorway.

Admission to the talks is free but places must be prebooked by ringing 041-9802444

Documenting & Exploring Diversity in Ireland's Built Heritage

Old Drogheda Society

ODS

This one-day symposium in Freemasons' Hall celebrates the work and reviews the objectives of the Buildings of Ireland series in recording the architecture of our island – old and new; urban and rural; from landmark buildings to hidden gems.

Directly modelled on Sir Nikolaus Pevsner’s original Buildings of England series, four volumes have been published to date by Yale University Press. The series commenced with North West Ulster, written by Alistair Rowan, (1979), and covering the four counties of Derry, Donegal, Fermanagh and Tyrone.  This was followed by North Leinster, written jointly by Rowan and Christine Casey (1991); Dublin, the historic city between the canals, by Christine Casey (2005); and the most recent, South Ulster, Armagh, Cavan and Monaghan, by Kevin Mulligan (2013).

The series continues apace with the forthcoming publication Cork City and County by Frank Keohane, due in mid-2015; and with Central Leinster, Kildare, Laois and Offaly, by Andrew Tierney expected in mid-2016. Nine further volumes are planned to take this ambitious project to completion.

Each volume includes a detailed introduction on the architectural development of the area, followed by a topographical gazetteer giving an account of every important structure – churches, castles, public and commercial buildings, country houses, towns and villages and contemporary architecture – in each of the counties covered.

Drogheda Journal Digitised & Online

Old Drogheda Society

The Drogheda Journal, a local newspaper which flourished in the first half of the 1800s has been added to the digitised online collection of The British Newspaper Archive which is an online service provided by the British Library.

So far they have digitised 4,400 pages of this paper, covering 1812-1836 and 1838-1840. Drogheda Municipal Library holds a microfilm copy of this paper, covering the years 1824-1842, but the advantage of the online digitised version is that it is word-searchable, whereas with the microfilm you have to search through the entire paper to find what you want.

The online service is subscription based – you can search for an item for free but you must pay a fee to access it. Members of the Old Drogheda Society can search this huge online archive (and many others) for free in the archive room of Drogheda Museum Millmount – by appointment  … ring 014 9833097.

Membership of the Old Drogheda Society is only €15 Per year.

The Drogheda Journal was Unionist in its politics and later morphed into The Drogheda Advertiser. In all, 17 Irish newspapers have just been added to The British Newspaper Archive site here in addition to the many major Irish titles already there.

Thanks to historian and author Ian Kenneally (the biographer of John Boyle O’Reilly) for drawing our attention to this useful addition.
