Cruicetown Graveyard Public Talk

Old Drogheda Society

Archaeologist Professor George Eogan, from Nobber, with Oliver Ward Secretary of Cruicetown Cemetery Conservation Committee.

Event: public talk in Cruicetown graveyard as part of Heritage Week.

Date: 26th August.

Time: 7.30pm

Speaker: Dr. Michael O'Neill.

Admission: free.

Description: The topic of the discussion is the history and architecture of Medieval Churches in Meath. It will be given by internationally renowned historian, author and lecturer Dr. Michael O'Neill, who in his address, will place particular emphasis on the 13th century church and cemetery of Cruicetown. The event is grant aided by Meath County Council.

The well maintained church structure contains the monument and vault of the Anglo-Norman Cruise family who gave their name to the townland, an early baptismal font, excellent stone carvings and recumbent effigies of family members.

The cemetery includes recorded burials from the 18th century, ancient memorials, the foundations of a bellcote and a carved “Ring” highcross, depicting the Crucifixion on one side with the Virgin and Child on the other.

A newly erected Interpretive Panel will provide an interesting genealogical and local history aspect to the event.

Cruicetown Cemetery Conservation Committee recently held a Mass in the cemetery last Sunday 27th July as part of the Blessing of the Graves ceremonies in Nobber.

The committee is finalising details to be included on an Interpretative Panel of Burials and Monuments, for display on the entrance to the graveyard.

The group has researched 470 burials in the graveyard and members have collected relevant information from relatives of those interred there.

Committee members recently visited various parishes in the surrounding area; Nobber, Kilbeg, Kilmainhamwood and Kingscourt, at weekend Masses with a draft copy of the display, in order to acquire as much detail as possible, for inclusion on the interpretative panel.

Host: Cruicetown Cemetery Conservation Committee in Nobber County Meath. The Committer was formed in 2004 to maintain and preserve the cemetery and research its history.
