Following last night's Building Ireland feature on the Boyne Viaduct, Nationwide's  programme with a report from  Alasdair Jackson on the links between Drogheda and St Oliver Plunkett will be shown tonight, Wednesday August 6th at 7 pm. 

St. Oliver Plunkett's head has been venerated in St. Peter's Church here in Drogheda since 1921 .... but his association with the town goes back much further than that .... back to the Seventeen hundreds. This summer a new book on his life has been published and just recently a new play has been performed in the town focusing on the days leading up to his execution. Reporter, Alasdair Jackson's been to Drogheda to find out more about the links between the town and Oliver Plunkett.

The Final Days of Oliver Plunkett

Today a free play, The Final Days of Oliver Plunkett will be performed at 3 pm, today. It was written by Duleek based Michael Ferguson, and it will renew the atmosphere of 17th century Drogheda and London recreated by actors from the Duleek Drama Players, Aisteoiri na Boinne and St Brigid’s Drama Group. .






The Final Days of Oliver Plunkett is a very much a community production involving local drama groups with seventeenth century props, period costumes and equipment supplied by Millmount Museum.



It is a great chance for visitors and locals alike, to learn more about the trial and excecution of St Oliver Plunkett, whose national shrine is in St Peter's Church.


Tomorrow the Annual St Oliver Plunkett Procession will leave the Holy Family Church , Ballsgrove at 2.50 pm sharp and arrive at St Peter's for 4 pm mass. Visitors from Germany, Belgium and the United Kingdom will join with people from all over Ireland in celebrating the life of St Oliver Plunkett.
