Old Drogheda Society

As part of its commemoration for the 1916 Easter Rising the Old Drogheda Society is hosting  the first of two lunchtime lectures in the Drogheda Tourist Office.

You are invited to listen to Liam Reilly on Tuesday April 26th at 1.05pm in the Tholsel (duration 30 minutes). Liam will speak on:

Frank Thornton: A Drogheda Man In The Thick Of The Action

Frank Thornton, was one of three brothers from Peter Street who fought in the Rising.

He was in charge of the company that occupied the Imperial Hotel/Clerys building opposite the GPO.

He was interned in Frongoch. But as the British had mistakenly recorded him as Frank Drennan, when he returned to Ireland, they had no record of him.

He later worked as Deputy Assistant Director of Intelligence for Michael Collins.

The lecture is free and all are welcome.

ODS Lecture: Shadow of the Brotherhood

Old Drogheda Society

The first Old Drogheda Society lecture of 2016 "Shadow of the Brotherhood" will be held tomorrow, Wednesday February 10th at 8pm in the Governor's House, Millmount, when Brendan Matthews will detail the extraordinary life story of 1916 Easter Rising leader, Tom Clarke.

Brendan will outline the life and times of Clarke, from his Fenian involvement with Clan na Gael in America, through his prison years in England and his reorganisation of the Irish Republican Brotherhood in the run up to the Easter Rising.

Although shunning the limelight, Thomas Clarke was the inspiration of the Rising, along with being the true  Patron of Patrick Pearse and he was also the first President of the Irish Republic.

Brendan will outline a significant Drogheda connection with Tom Clarke; the consequences of which had an effect both nationally and internationally following his arrest and subsequent execution.

This is a public lecture and all are welcome. There will be a book stall on the night.

Tonight's 1916 Lecture in Barbican

Old Drogheda Society

Just a reminder that tonight's 1916 Commemoration Lectures which were originally due to be held in the Governor's House, have been moved to the Barbican Centre, William Street, to cater for the expected numbers. The lectures start at 7.30pm.

The first lecture will see Mary Gallagher, a grand niece of Eamonn Ceannt, speak on Eamonn Ceannt - The Drogheda Connection. Mary's book on Ceannt has recently been published by O'Brien Press as part of the 16 Men series on the 16 men executed after the Rising.

Éamonn Ceannt is, in many ways, the ‘unknown’ man among the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising, and the signatories to the proclamation of the Irish Republic. The son of a head constable in the Royal Irish Constabulary , who served in both Drogheda and Ardee, Eamonn was an unlikely revolutionary.

One of Ceannt’s brothers had followed their father into the RIC and another was a professional soldier in the Royal Dublin Fusiliers.

Ceannt himself had a secure, pensionable job in Dublin Corporation. He was very happily married and had a young son.

The second lecture will see Liam Reilly of Drogheda Museum Millmount talk on 1916 Volunteer Activity in Drogheda.
The Irish Volunteers in Drogheda were small in number and Liam will talk about the men from the area who actually fought in the Rising, the ones who wanted to fight but never got any further that Mell bridge, the men arrested after the Rising and the famous court case of William McQuillan v DI Carbury.

These lectures are open to the public and everyone is welcome.

1916 Rising: Joe Stanley, Printer To The Rising

Old Drogheda Society

As part of the events planned to commemorate the 1916 Easter Rising, there will be a lecture on Monday December 7th in the Governor's House, Millmount at 8pm, entitled Joe Stanley, Printer To The Rising by author Tom Reilly.

Joe Stanley started many local businesses in Dundalk, Drogheda and Clogherhead, including the Boyne Cinema and The Drogheda Argus. He was 26 in 1916 and part-editor, manager, owner and printer or publisher of newspapers and journals for the republican cause.

On Easter Monday 1916, not long after Pearse read the Proclamation to bemused passers-by, Joe slipped into the GPO. There he met his friend James Connolly, who introduced him to Pearse. The three men sat down together and began to plan the best way to inform the mystified citizenry what was happening. Joe became Pearse's Press Agent and published several war news missives.

This lecture is organised by the Dundalk and District Old IRA Commemoration Committee and is open to the public.
