Years
of Turbulence: The Irish Revolution and Its Aftermath
edited by Diarmaid Ferriter &
Susannah Riordan
9781910820070 (hb)
‘UCD Press has produced an
appropriately elegant-looking book’ – The Irish Times
‘The book is suitably scholarly,
and there’s no doubting the effort taken in winkling out valuable insights from
hitherto darkened corners of the period’ – Irish Examiner
‘An excellent new book’ – The
Irish Voice
Years of Turbulence powerfully
showcases many new perspectives on the Irish revolutionary period of 1912–23,
through the vivid and provocative scholarship of leading and emerging
historians. The contributors to this fascinating collection not only focus on
new angles, they also revisit traditional assumptions, and elaborate on some of
the central, current debates on the revolutionary period. Many muted voices of
the revolution are given a platform for the first time in these pages. The
collection demonstrates a determination to uncover personal experiences and
protests that until now have remained relatively undocumented and ignored. The
book is lavishly illustrated with images of the period and is in honour of
Michael Laffan. RRP €40 £32

‘Emmet O’Connor’s new biography of
Jim Larkin is labour history writing at its very best’ – Sunday
Business Post
‘It is essential reading for all
those seeking to understand Larkinism and the complex history of the Irish
working class throughout the first half of the 20th Century’ – Irish
Examiner
‘masterly new biography’ – Irish
Independent
‘very
readable book’ – The Irish Times
Much has been written about ‘Big Jim’
Larkin but, remarkably, this is the first full-length biography. Through the
research of leading Labour historian Emmet O'Connor, Larkin – Labour leader and
agitator – is thoroughly evaluated. Based on newly uncovered and extensive
police records, FBI files, and archives of the Communist International
in Moscow, O’Connor goes beyond the public figure of heroism to explore
the hidden side of a very private person who hated people knowing his business
and kept his ambitions and personal demons behind a veil of silence. In Big
Jim Larkin Emmet O’Connor reveals a man who proves to be both hero
and wrecker. RRP €40 £32

‘These
contemporary accounts by well known personalities of historical events and
attitudes have an immediacy that conventional histories do not have’ – Books Ireland
The Centenary Classics series allows
the reader to witness the 1913–23 revolutionary period through the eyes of
those on the ground, offering a unique and authentic perspective in this
unforgettable collection of accounts of the birth of the Irish nation. The
series is introduced by Fearghal McGarry and comes packaged in an attractive
wrap. The six titles in the series include an analysis from an Ulster
Protestant, and supporter of Home Rule, of events leading up to the arming of
the Orangemen in the lead up to the Ulster crisis; a jail journal from Darrell
Figgis after his arrest in the aftermath of the 1916 Rising; the story of Seán
Connolly of Longford, who was fatally wounded during the War of Independence;
eye-witness accounts by two reporters from the Irish Independent of the
historic Treaty debates of Dáil Éireann; an account of life at the grassroots
during the Irish War of Independence and the Civil War by a member of the Irish
Volunteers; and an eyewitness account of events in Ireland during the
revolutionary period from the viewpoint of the Irish Republican Brotherhood at
the dawn of Irish independence. RRP €60 £50 (€15 £11 individually)
Frank
Ryan (Life and Times New Series)
by Fearghal McGarry
by Fearghal McGarry
9781906359362
(pb)
One of the most famous revolutionaries in Irish history, Frank Ryan fought in the War of Independence and Irish Civil War, before becoming a leader of the inter-war Irish Republican Army. Embracing socialist republicanism in the 1930s, Ryan became a founding member of the short-lived but influential Republican Congress, and led the Irish contingent within the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War. Following his capture by Franco's forces, his release was secured by the efforts of German military intelligence which sought to use him to further its wartime alliance with the IRA. He spent the final years of his life as an advisor to the Nazi regime. This study provides a concise reinterpretation of Ryan’s controversial life and legacy based on primary sources, including much previously unpublished material. Setting Ryan’s career within the wider context of the violent politics of inter-war Europe, it examines his remarkable ideological journey from socialist republicanism to Nazi collaboration. It concludes by examining why – despite his lack of political success – Ryan became such a widely admired figure in modern Irish politics. RRP €17 £14

Drogheda Local Voices Resource Guide of Current Best Practice on Information Management
Old Drogheda Society
Last summer Drogheda Local Voices worked in conjunction with students from the School of Information & Library Studies, at University College Dublin, as part of their Capstone project. They developed the attached Resource Guide which we are now making accessible to the general public in the hope that it can also assist other community based organisations manage their digital collections.
As a society, we have become dependent on digital files without taking any precautions to ensure that they are accessible in the future. The aim of the guide is to provide a list of resources that deal with the same issues that DLV face in terms of the collection, management and dissemination of its collection as well as developing sustainable policies that suit the organisation’s needs.
It is hoped that this guide can also assist in the development and training of staff and other users at DLV as well as similar community-based organisations. This is by no means an exhaustive list of materials, but these resources act as a good starting point for people new to and/or with limited experience of information management.
Many of these resources were specifically sourced to suit the needs of Drogheda Local Voices, while others were discovered while studying a Masters in Library and Information Studies (MLIS) and Information Systems (MSc). These resources were selected from a variety of sources including information made freely available by similar organisations.
