Old Drogheda Society
The 5th in the series of Evening "Walk & Talks" hosted by the Old Drogheda Society, will take place tonight, Wednesday August 10th when Audrey Smith, will lead the walk and talk you around the streets of Drogheda.
The Crime and Punishment Tour encompasses centuries of history, highlighting stories of those who committed crimes and the punishment served on them.
Audrey will visit the locations of the former places of detention in the town and unveil some interesting stories on law and order in the Drogheda down through the years.
Content and stopping points
Dublin Road – Prostitutes, thieves and informers: Red Pat Bannon and the lodging houses of Drogheda.
James Street Old Gaol – The Drogheda Hanged
Shop Street – Murder most foul, the homicide of James Woods in 1868, during the election rally for Benjamin Whitworth & St Savours Bridewell
The Tholsel – Law & Order, the history of women and children in the dock
Peter Street Lock Up – Thomas Guppy and the Drogheda Gang
Rope Walk – Felix Maguire, the last man hanged in Drogheda
Scarlet Street Jail – Stories from a 19th century gaol and interesting extracts of the Governor’s diary
